「벌거벗은 임금님」은 14세기 스페인의 J. 마누엘이 쓴 J. 마누엘이 쓴 ‘루카노르 백작’에 나오는 한 이야기를 번안한 것이라고 한다. 옷에 헛된 욕심을 가진 왕이 바보들의 눈에는 보이지 않는 옷을 짜준다는 사기꾼들에게 현혹되어 일어나는 해프닝으로, 기이한 내용의 원작이 사회 비판성 동화로 새로 태어났다.

A long time ago, there lived an emperor.  

The emperor’s love was his clothes.   

Every day, he wore the finest clothes.  

He often changed a few times a day.  

His purpose was always to show off his clothes.  

When he met people from other countries,

he cared only about his clothes.   

Two thieves heard about this emperor.  

They thought of a plan to deceive the emperor.

“Let’s go to the city. 

We can pretend we can make magic cloth,”

one of the thieves said.
